![]() The Wilbom Temple Church Family was blessed in 1958 when the then Deacon and Sister Emmett H. Jeffress became members of this congregation. God in His providence was preparing a leader for us. Dr. Jeffress and his wife, Dolly M. Jeffress, both natives of South Boston, Virginia , were married in Albany, New York in December 1953. They joined the Macedonia Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Reverend George L. Bums where Elder Jeffress was ordained a Deacon. In 1958, Elder Jeffress accepted the call to the ministry and was ordained in 1962 by the late Bishop O.M. Kelley, Jurisdictional Bishop of Eastern New York Diocese. From 1958 to 1974, Elder Jeffress served as Pastor of the Junior Church and in 1974, upon the homegoing of the late Bishop William Wilborn, he accepted the will of the Lord and this congregation to become our pastor with his gracious wife, Dolly, by his side. Humility, a quality often spoken of but seldom seen, is the description that accurately depicts our Pastor. He is a humble man. Pastor Jeffress consistently and effectively demonstrates the attributes of quality leadership while protecting the "sheep" of this pasture and does so in a steadfast manner. Our Pastor loves God and shows God's love to us. He is a pastor who is well studied and proficient in the Scriptures. Pastor Jeffress is always prepared, confident and precise. The Word of God springs forth through him as "living water" as he brings to us the refreshing "good news" of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Wilbom Temple is an oasis in the desert for all who enter our doors. Under the leadership of Pastor Jeffress we have embarked on restoring our historical church edifice. Activities developed under his leadership include the "JESUS" Group, a support group for recovering substance abusers; "A Better Way Ministry", an outreach program for adolescent residents of Tryon School; "Wings of Love" ministry for persons who are sick and shut in; and the Food Pantry which provides food and clothing for persons in need. Pastor Jeffress is a compassionate, confident leader who encourages church ministries to promote spiritual growth and development for each member. Notable accomplishment include a recognition service honoring the contributions of African American Law Enforcement Officers, past and present, of the Albany City Police Department; a Family Conference convened to identify and discuss issues that affect families; host to the Annual Black, Puerto Rican and Hispanic Legislative Caucus' Worship Service, and a past participant in the City of Albany's "First Night" activities. In February 2000, Pastor and Mother Jeffress served as hosts to Vice President, Albert Gore and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton. Pastor Jeffress is recognized, respected and honorably represents Wilbom Temple at both secular and non secular meetings throughout the Capital Region, New York State and the National levels of the Church of God in Christ. He is the recipient of several awards, citations and certificates. He received a Special Award from the New York State Black, Puerto Rican and Hispanic Legislative Caucus for outstanding work in the ministry. He serves as Special Assistant to the State Bishop Elder James Gaylord and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Church of God In Christ Jurisdiction. Pastor Jeffress received the Black History Award for diligence and support in promoting Black History activities in the Albany community. In 1998, Pastor Jeffress received the Certification of Recognition Award presented by the Adult Learning Center, City School District of Albany. Pastor Jeffress is a graduate and Alumni President of the Mid Hudson Institute and on August 1, 2000, he received the Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from the Spirit of Truth Bible College, Lynchburg.
